College Admissions Scam Brings Background Checks on Student Athletes to Stanford University

Stanford President Marc Tessier-Lavigne and Provost Persis Drell recently made an announcement that the University will now conduct reviews and verification’s on student athletes recommended by coaches at  Hire Image  to confirm their athletic credentials.  In the aftermath of the college admissions scam, a new protocol is in place where a “member of the executive leadership of the Athletics Department will be responsible for each of Stanford’s 36 varsity men’s and women’s sports and will review and confirm the athletic credentials of all recruits who are proposed by a coach to receive an athletic recommendation.  This will provide a second, higher-level verification of the athletic credentials of recruited student-athletes at  Hire Image  before that information is shared with the admission office, to be considered as one factor in a comprehensive review of each student’s qualifications for Stanford admission.” Verifying credentials is an important ...

D.C. Employers Pay Nearly $500,000 in ‘Ban the Box’ Violations Over the Past 5 Years

Ban the Box has been in effect since 2014 in Washington, D.C., but you wouldn’t know it by the actions of some D.C. businesses.  More than 1,100 administrative charges have been filed against employers who continue to ask about criminal histories on job applications, despite the ban. Those charges have resulted in approximately $500,000 in fines, according to a report by the D.C. Office of Human Rights and  Hire Image  information.The report also notes that the city has received more than 1,800 complaints since the D.C. Council passed the Fair Criminal Record Screening Act, which prevented employers from inquiring about an applicant’s criminal history before an offer is made. With regard to the violations, a vast majority of them (more than 90%) were related to criminal background questions that appeared on job applications, while less than 5% were related to questions an employer asked in an interview. New Jersey Becomes the Next State to Ban Salary History Inquiries

Effective January 1, 2020:  New Jersey employers are prohibited from screening job applicants based on their salary history including, but not limited to, prior wages, salaries, or benefits and from requiring that the applicant’s salary history satisfy any minimum or maximum criteria. However, if an applicant “voluntarily, without employer prompting or coercion” provides the employer with salary history information, an employer may consider that information in determining salary, benefits, and other compensation for an applicant, and may verify the applicant’s salary history.  Additionally, applicants may provide salary history information to an employment agency, which can only be shared with potential employers with the express written consent of the applicant. NAPBS Announces Change in Name to PBSA

On September 9 th , the National Association of Professional Background Screeners (NAPBS) announced that the association’s name has changed to the Professional Background Screening Association (PBSA), noting that the “new name marks the culmination of the association’s transition into a truly global organization.”  The name change is only one part of the re-brand, which also includes a new logo and website at  www.thepbsa.org . “PBSA has a significant international footprint, and we only expect it to grow larger,” said Melissa Sorenson, executive director of PBSA. “It was clear to us that we needed to bring our name and brand in line with what our association is today – a truly global organization. Background Check Helps Convict Murderer

In April, we reported that a background check helped to solve a 20-year-old cold case in Florida when a job applicant had to provide his fingerprints.  Now, a Palm Beach County jury convicted the man involved, Todd Barket, of first-degree murder and robbery and sentenced him to life in prison for the death of Sondra Better.
